Are you trying to lose weight; let's say a few pounds, or perhaps more than a few pounds? If so, you're not alone. Weight loss is one of the major problems prevalent in society, with so much of the population either overweight or obese. Do stay away from those that contain additives particularly sugar. Many people turned obese from consuming too much sugar, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats.

Then, increase your water intake. Water does's not have any calories and can quench your thirst. If you feel bored with plain water, you can opt for the carbonated "flavored" waters. They may have a little added flavor but they do not contain sodium and neither do they have calories. Try to wean yourself away from diet soda as its phosphorous content is harmful to your bones and teeth. There are some studies that suggest that the artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas can contribute to weight gain.

Also, it is important for this weight loss program that you to get a little exercise. You need to gradually increase your physical activity. One word of caution -- do not try to do too much too soon especially if your body is not used to physical exertion. You can start off by taking a brisk walk for say five minutes on the first day. Then increase your activities on the succeeding sessions and slowly work your way up to more strenuous routines. If you have any medical condition, be sure to seek clearance from your doctor before implementing any change in your diet or engaging in any exercise regimen.

When you have started on the first three steps mentioned above, it is time to review your total food consumption both in terms of quantity and quality. If your diet consists more of simple carbohydrates or junk food, or any other foods considered unhealthy, you will still gain additional pounds despite your other efforts to lose weight. What you need to do is to eliminate those foods totally from your diet and go for healthier alternatives instead. You may also wish to cut down on the amounts consumed.

Let us say you are fond of eating potato chips. Instead of buying the popular brands that are loaded with sodium and cooked in unhealthy fats, you can make your own, prepared in a healthier way. Simply slice a couple of potatoes and pan fry them using non-stick spray. For added zest in flavor, you can a sprinkling of some herbs. And in terms of quantity, you are still safe to finish up one whole potato without ruining your weight loss plan. Moreover, eating in this manner can fill you up and satisfy your hunger more. It is unlike junk food that can raise your blood sugar level in one moment and send it plunging down the next resulting into feeling hungrier than before.

There is a large number of health conditions associated with weight gain and the greater the increase in body weight the more that problems occur. The annoying part is that natural weight maintenance is not difficult to understand but overweight people choose to ignore this.

Maintaining a natural weight loss regime means sticking to low fat meals that are high in fiber and contain complex carbohydrates with a moderate amount of protein. A meal such as this would be something like a baked potato (complex carbohydrate), the fiber is vegetables and protein is a lean cut of meat.

Another problem is the obsession with fat free or low fat foods that food manufactures are stacking the shelves with which despite their popularity are not stopping the problem of obesity.

One of the greatest delusions of the 1990s was that no fat meant non-fattening but the truth is you are often getting just as many calories from these foods; the calories are just not coming from fat. If you really want to lose weight through a program you will need to dump the fat free products and eat small healthy snacks that are high in nutrition.

Some health care specialists believe that a good method is to eat smaller meals and healthy, nutritious snacks every 3 or 4 hours. Determination, will power and belief should be aspects of your natural weight loss program if you really want to look well and be healthy.

The personal touch makes us feel validated and gives us the motivation to workout.

2. Exercise should be fun. No more hours spent on the treadmill or riding a stationary bike if you don’t want to. Exercise classes offer routines like belly dancing, salsa dancing, African beats and the like to get people back in shape.

3. What about the children? Children are the fastest growing segment of the population facing obesity. Efforts are being made in school cafeterias, in doctor’s offices, and in weight loss programs to stem this tide and give our children a fighting chance.

4. Families that work out together can lose weight together. With children affected by obesity, weight loss is important to their future. Parents work with children so that they can lose weight and the entire family ends up with better health.

5. Quick recipes are great. We’ve moved from fast food to fast and easy preparation. Recipes that offer healthy alternatives to our favorite meals in half the time are perfect for busy families. Food magazines like Kraft Food and Family and Cooking Light offer recipes with few ingredients that can be fixed in a jiffy. People can also learn to use versatile foods in several recipes for a new taste each night.

6. Can I have granola with that? Functional foods are the name of the game. Yogurt containing bacteria that aid in digestion and cereal with extra vitamins and minerals do double duty to keep us healthy. Even the orange juice has omega-3 fatty acids and calcium. These additives in popular foods supplement diets that would otherwise be lacking in them.

7. Cosmetic procedures for troubled areas. A relatively new and trendy fat loss treatment is called lipodissolve/injection lipolysis. It is touted by some weight loss clinics as a great way to quickly 'melt away' fat, especially in problem areas such as the 'love handles,' thighs, buttocks, and behind the arms. The treatment is non-invasive and involves the injection of phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate (PC/DC) directly into fatty areas using micro-fine needles. Unlike liposuction, which removes several liters of fat at once, lipodissolve is used to remove only very small quantities of fat over the course of two or three treatments. It has become popular despite the FDA's statement that, "…these are unapproved drugs for unapproved uses." Little research has been done to prove the drugs are safe and effective. It should be noted that this is not intended for large volumes of fat reduction, or general weight loss.

8. Diet programs that work. People are doing their homework. Fad diets are on the way out and I think for good. Wasting money on programs that talk a good game but provide few results is frustrating. No one program works for everybody, so individuals should seek out one they feel they can follow.

9. Health concerns fuel safer methods of weight loss. The effects of obesity include diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death. We are a nation that is slowly killing ourselves. Instead of heart surgery and pills, we want to regain our health the right way—through diet and exercise.

10. Using our heads. Knowledge is the key. We choose research instead of throwing money at every infomercial. Permanent weight loss comes one day at a time. People are taking the time to learn the truth about nutrition and exercise and how they work to bring about weight loss.
