<p>Metabolism — Converting Food Into Energy</p>
<p>As covered in the Tenth Article in this series, the body needs fuel and oxygen to operate, and the process by which the body <em>changes</em> the food you eat into energy and internal building material is called metabolism (from the Greek <em>metabole</em> “change”).</p>
<p>This conversion is achieved by a complex biochemical process, where calories from carbohydrates, fats or proteins are chemically combined with oxygen to form cellular building blocks while also releasing the energy your body needs to function.</p>
<p>Let’s take a closer look.</p>
<p>Catabolism and Anabolism</p>
<p>Our food consists of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, usually in the form of large, complex molecules. The body cannot build muscle, nor can it maintain organs, with the proteins it consumes, but must first break them down into amino acids, which are then combined to form proteins the body can use as building blocks.</p>
<p><em>Exergonic Reactions</em></p>
<p>An exergonic chemical reaction is one where large molecules (such as food) are broken down into smaller molecules with the release of energy. The word comes from the Greek, <em>ex-</em> out, <em>ergon</em> work, meaning energy (work) is released; energy, of course, is most commonly measured by the work it can perform.</p>
<p>This process is also known as <em>Catabolism</em> (Greek, <em>cata-</em> down, <em>ballein</em> to throw).</p>
<p><em>Endergonic Reactions</em></p>
<p>An endergonic reaction is one where new proteins are built from amino acids, and is a process that requires energy. The word, again, is from the Greek, <em>en-</em> in, <em>ergon</em> work, meaning it takes in—uses—energy.</p>
<p>This process is also known as <em>Anabolism</em> (Greek root, <em>ana-</em> up, <em>ballein</em> to throw).</p>
<p>So, depending on which way the “throw” is made, down for breaking down and releasing energy, or up for building up and using energy, it’s either Catabolism or Anabolism.</p>
<p>Combined, Catabolism and Anabolism make up Metabolism (Greek root, <em>meta-</em> along with, among, <em>ballein</em> to throw).</p>
<p>And the messenger service which carries released energy from the point of catabolic extraction to areas of need is called ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate, an intermediate molecule capable of storing large amounts of energy in its chemical bonds for relay to anabolic processes or other areas of energy needs such a muscle contraction.</p>
<p>Basal Metabolic Rate</p>
<p>Also called Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), BMR indicates the amount of energy used by the body while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment (too hot or too cold places additional energy requirements on the body), in a post-absorptive state—meaning the digestive system is also at rest, which usually requires about twelve hours of fasting.</p>
<p>The energy consumed in this state of rest is to fuel the basic (basal) needs of the organism, such as the heart, the lungs, the brain, and the rest of the nervous system, the liver, kidneys, the sex organs, muscles, and skin.</p>
<p>During any given day, the basal life processes (BMR) use about 70% of the body’s total energy requirement, the digestive processes use 10%, and the remaining 20% goes to power our physical activities.</p>
<p>Of the 70% used by BMR, the liver uses 27%, the brain 19%, the heart 7%, the kidneys 10%, skeletal muscles 18%, and other organs 19%.</p>
<p>Knowing how much work the liver has to perform constantly, that’s hardly surprising. It is surprising though that the heart, which never ever rests, uses only 7%—a very efficient muscle, that.</p>
<p>BMR Measurement</p>
<p>An accurate measurement of BMR is a complex process that involves a gas analysis through either direct or indirect calorimetry (the measurement of quantities of heat)—don’t try this at home.</p>
<p>A rough estimation of BMR can be made through an equation using age, sex, height, and weight. Many online tools are available using these factors to calculate your BMR. Use them.</p>
<p>BMR can also be estimated by the determining the amount of lean tissue that makes up your body. Lean tissue at rest, whether male or female, burns roughly 16 calories per pound per day, so once lean mass is determined and multiplied by 16, you’d have the basal caloric need for that person.</p>
<p>Why Do You Care?</p>
<p>That takes us back to our old friend 1LTD, the First Law of Thermodynamics. To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume; and in order to establish exactly how many calories you burn during any given day, you need to account for BMR, which is 70% of that amount.</p>
<p>The proud owner of a body containing 125 pounds of lean mass would have a BMR of roughly 2,000 calories. Another 300 or so calories are spent by the digestive system. The rest is physical activity; say 600 calories depending on what you do.</p>
<p>This person would burn 2,900 calories a day, so in order to lose weight he or she would have to consume less than 2,900 calories. 1LTD.</p>
<p>Exercise and BMR</p>
<p>Anaerobic exercise—such as weight lifting—builds muscle and alters the lean mass equation in favor of lean. This will raise BMR. While aerobic exercise is beneficial for the cardiovascular system, and while it in itself burns calories, there is no direct link to suggest that it affects BMR in any significant way.</p>
<p>Bottom Line</p>
<p>1LTD rules. But in order to burn more calories than you consume, you need to know the numbers.</p>
<p>BMR makes up 70% of what you burn. It therefore needs to be estimated or measured as accurately as possible.</p>

Obesity is commonly regarded as an increased accumulation of fat in the body of an individual that poses danger to his or her health. There are many causes leading to obesity. However, one of the most common causes is the imbalance between calorie intake and use. In such cases weight loss specialists recommend sticking to a low calorie diet and employing an intense exercise program to restrict calorie over-consumption and burn the energy that is already stored in the body in the form of fat. Still, it may sound pretty easy on paper but n reality many obese people find it hard to follow such a regimen and their weight loss goals don&#8217;t get as close as they wish to in a short time. A recent research headed by Nikhil Dhurandhar, who is an associate professor at the Infections and Obesity Laboratory, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University has displayed that by simply eating eggs for breakfasts a person improves his or her chances of losing weight substantially and increases compliance. During the study it was observed that overweight and obese people who ate two eggs with their low calorie breakfast have shown much better improvements in weight loss compared to their peers who didn&#8217;t take eggs for breakfast and were simply using a low calorie diet. To support the assumption, researchers have further compared overweight patients who ate egg breakfast to those who were on a regular bagel breakfast. As a result, those people who were following an egg diet have shown an average 5.8 pound weight loss during 8 weeks of the study. The average results in the “bagel breakfast” group were a bit more modest – only 3.5 pounds over the same period. Simple math gave researchers the right to state that egg breakfast has showed a 65% improvement in weight loss rates compared to other low calorie types of meals. On top of that, people who were following the egg breakfast diet reported to be more energetic and active throughout the day, while the BMI in these patients had a 61% greater drop. To make the mentioned diet even more attractive it was found that egg breakfasts don&#8217;t affect the lipid levels of the blood. Both the HDL and LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides content test of the blood haven&#8217;t shown any remarkable shifts to either side with low calorie diet breakfasts (both egg and bagel based). These findings advocate the use of eggs in overweight and obese patients without the risk of developing heart issues. Moreover, people on egg diet have reported to have a much greater feeling of satiety and less drive to consume more calories throughout the day as compared to those who weren&#8217;t eating eggs. <p>Being overweight is not always just a matter of being lazy or eating too much. Sometimes there are other issues that cause people to become obese.</p>
<p>The problem is that no one diet automatically recognizes the difference between how a fat person’s metabolism operates and how a thin person’s operates. In essence a thin person and a fat person could eat the same meals for a week and the thin person would not gain weight while the fat one would.</p>
<p>Fat people often have abnormally low metabolisms and this means they have problems burning food as fuel.  When it is not burned the excess is converted into fat.  To correct this you need to embark on a healthy diet.</p>
<p>Yet another factor that plays into weight gain is that people with abnormally low metabolism are always hungry. The pain of their cravings is very physical and very real.  The reason fat people crave food is because they do not feel full after eating. It is because their body is not using the nutrients in the food to nourish them.  It is not uncommon for overweight people to become immediately hungry after eating even a very large meal!  </p>
<p>Another very real cause of being overweight is emotional overeating. This is the tendency to “eat your anger.” Evolutionary biologists describe this as the need to “bite into something” when we are angry or stressed as that is exactly what are cave man ancestors did. </p>
<p>Food can also take the place of approval, love or sex or even a parent’s love.  People who are overeating for these reasons are often very miserable when they go on a diet because they associate food with love and feel deprived with love once the diet requires them to restrict their calories.</p>
<p>The idea is to adopt a non-acidic diet so that you are free of these cravings, which can become a vicious circle. Eating a non-alkaline diet will put you back in control of these cravings. It is a very freeing experience that puts you backs in control when it comes to choosing to eat what you want and when you want. You also won’t overeat because you will always feel nourished and being properly nourished is absolutely key to stopping those hunger pangs that can lead to weight gain in the first place.</p>

As you are eating less you need to make sure that the foods that you are eating are as jam packed with nourishment as possible.</p>
<p>One of the most nutritious foods that you can eat while on a diet is beans. Beans are rich in fiber and don’t cost much. They are also a great source of protein and very cheap,</p>
<p>Broccoli is another food that is great when you are on a diet.  The roughage helps you from getting constipated. The folic acid in broccoli prevents you from getting constipated and keeps you from developing iron poor blood.</p>
<p>Eat as much fruit as possible when you are a diet.  Cantaloupe is a very nourishing choice as it supplies you with all the Vitamin A and C that you need in a day.  Blend this with ice to make a great shake. Melons of all kinds are crammed with the vitamins that you need to be very healthy.</p>
<p>Yet another great thing to eat when you are on a diet is oranges. These have vitamin C, folic acid and fiber.  Oranges are stacked with Vitamin A too. </p>

<p>You don’t need a fancy gym membership, a lot of expensive equipment or anything else to lose weight. You don’t need pills or to be on a special diet either. You might be surprised to learn that you can lose a great deal of weight in a safe and natural way just by taking a long walk every day.</p>
<p>Many overweight people, especially those who have arthritis or other problems have already discovered the benefits of walking. It is the safest form of exercise and most people can at least take a walk around the block every day.</p>
<p>The idea is to have a brisk walk at a pace that gets your heart rate going. The fact is that you won’t lose much weight by just ambling or strolling along. You need to get sweaty for this or you will not be optimizing how much you can lose.  It is possible to lose weight by walking slow but it will take ages. You need to walk at a rapid pace and keep it up  for at last an hour.  The faster your heart pumps the more weight you will lose.</p>
<p>The secret is &#8212; the more you walk the more lean muscle you will develop. Lean muscle burns more calories as you use it. This means that you burn more calories because you have more muscular mass in general.</p>
<p>So how much weight can you lose by walking.  Keep this in mind. A pound of fat equals 3500 calories.  In order to lose that one pound a week you will need to burn off 3,500 calories. When it comes to losing weight it is the amount of distance that you cover that matters. Walking for a long time at a slow pace will not do much for your weight loss efforts.</p>
<p>You can expect to lose at least one pound a week by walking at a moderate pace for at least a half an hour to an hour a week.  Not only is walking the best thing for shedding pounds but it can also help prevent other disorders such as heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, stroke and breast cancer. Another bonus is that walking can help keep your immune system in good working order. </p>
<p>If you are not used to exercising you might want to take it easy when you first start. Take care not to overdo it if you are in recovery from an illness or operation. In fact it is a really good idea to get checked out by a doctor before you begin any kind of exercise program – including a regimen to walk your weight off.</p>

<p>1. Find out what is causing you to be overweight.  If the problem is bad nutrition, then see a dietitian or read books that will teach you how to eat properly.  If the problem is more emotional, learn how to take care of your emotions without eating.  Some people gain weight because of hormonal issues, and this might be something you want to discuss with your doctor if you want to see results with your fat loss diet.  Whatever the problem is &#8211; you will be able to handle it better once you know what it is.</p>
<p>2. Be willing to be in control of your food.  That means not allowing friends and family to convince you that just one won&#8217;t hurt, and it also means paying attention to restaurant food.  However, most of all it means not letting food be in charge.  Instead of trying severe diet and exercise plans, look for a sustainable option that will result in the best long term physical and mental health.  After all, being thin is only one part of being healthy.</p>
<p>3. Instead of eating three big meals, eat small frequent meals.  If you eat frequently throughout the day, your metabolism works continuously and burns calories.  If you eat big meals your metabolism goes up and down and it is actually harder to lose weight that way. Pay attention to what you eat during these meals and stay away from processed snacks that are high in fat and sugar.</p>
<p>4. Take your time.  Eating more slowly and allowing yourself to savor the food does two things.  It allows your body to tell you more readily when you&#8217;re full, and it helps you satisfy your appetite. After all, if you&#8217;re eating quickly, the taste of the food may not register at all.</p>
<p>5. Take baby steps.  Do not starve yourself and do not start a fast loss diet that will expect you to make drastic changes.  If you want to succeed in  your diet it needs to be easy to follow.  Take small steps, and get used to them one at a time until you reach your goal.</p>
<p>6. Eat a balanced diet and don&#8217;t eat processed food.  Eating processed food is really bad for you because it is high in fat and sugar.  It will cause you to gain weight and put you at risk for diabetes and other physical problems. Foods like lean protein, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables are much better for you and will help you stay healthy in the long run.</p>
<p>7. Make sure you drink throughout the day.  Sometimes when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty.  Hydrating yourself properly will make you feel full, and will help your body cleanse itself. Water is the best beverage, so make sure to drink as much water as you need.</p>

<p>Genetics contribute to this, but anyways, you will find that men burn calories faster than women. Age, gender or genetics &#8221; These are things out of our control. And thus, attributing this as crucial factors for your metabolic activities could be a mistake at best. Remember, you dont need to do anything special for a good rate of metabolism.</p>
<p>Did you know that your body could burn 6 calories even while you are resting daily? May not sound like a lot at this point, but remember, you are burning calories for doing absolutely nothing.</p>
<p>While you are just resting and not doing anything, you could end up burning 6 calories daily. Maybe small, but when you add these up, it counts to something big.</p>
<p>Make it a habit to drink a glass of water before each meal. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. These foods have a high degree of fluid in them, which will ensure that your body stays hydrated at all times. Importantly, this will ensure enough calories are burned.</p>
<p>You should ideally drink a glass of water just before your meal or snack. You should also prefer eating fruits and vegetables, both of which are extremely rich in fluids. The more fluids you intake, the better it is for your metabolism.</p>
<p>Preferably, eat 3-4 short meals with a gap of an hour or two. This will keep your metabolic cycle running at all times, which can only be beneficial for you.</p>
<p>Add some spice to your food. Well, adding a lot of it may not be good for your appetite, but small quantities of spices in your diet may not harm you at all. For starters, it could boost your metabolic activities by about 23%. At best, the effects of eating spicy food could be temporary, but in the long run, it could add up to a big deal.</p>
<p>You may not be used to the spicy tingling, but one thing is for sure &#8221; It is extremely healthy for the rate of metabolism. Eating some amount of spices in your diet will help you increase the rate of metabolism by 23%. Ideally speaking, any intake of pasta should be supplemented with some spices.</p>
<p>And here is a no-brainer for you &#8221; If you wish to burn calories fast, take in a lot of proteins, as opposed to carbs or fats. Proteins will help you burn calories faster than these foods. Importantly, what you should do is spice up your pasta with some red flakes, if you really are a pasta fan.</p>
<p>Well, this is not true, because if you wish to have a good rate of metabolism, all you have to do is build up a good muscle and stay active.</p>

<p>1. Variety is the spice of life: This is true not only of foods but also workouts! If you want to reap the maximum benefit out of exercises, you should do a variety of workouts so as to keep your body guessing! When you do the same old workout each and every day, your body gets accustomed to it and consequently burns fewer calories than before.</p>
<p>Think about it this way: if you eat the same old food time and again your tongue would get used to its taste and then you would no longer be as interested in that food as before! This picture holds true for workouts as well!</p>
