Running Shoes Guide

Before you set out to purchase your first pair of running shoes, you should be intimately aware of your individual foot shape and the fundamental differences between the various types of running shoes.

Your foot shape is determined by the arch of your foot. A low arch, or flat foot, tends to move in such a way that the heel strikes the ground too far towards the outside edge. This movement then transfers the weight along the foot causing the foot to rotate back too far. A low arch foot requires motion control running shoes. A normal arch, or middle arch foot will land slightly on the outside edge, transfer the weight along the foot causing it to roll slightly inwards. A runner with a normal arch need only search for running shoes with moderately enhanced stability running shoes. A foot with a high arch will land closer to the heel of the foot when running and when the weight is transferred along the foot there is little rotation resulting in very little shock absorption. A high arched foot requires cushioned running shoes.

The motion control running shoes that are designed for the low arch runner are designed to prevent the excessive rotation as the weight is transferred along the foot. Correcting this excessive rotation protects the foot from injury. The correction is incorporated into the running shoe by designing the shoe in such a way that it is more rigid and slightly heavier.

Stability running shoes are recommended for a normal arch or middle arch foot are designed with a minimal amount of both motion control and cushioning and will help to protect the runner from injuries often associated with improper running shoes.

Cushioned running shoes for the high arch foot are designed exactly the way you would think they would be – with a great amount of additional cushioning. The additional cushioning encourages the correct foot rotation and provides the superior shock absorption necessary for the runner with a high arch to avoid injury.

Proper running shoes suited specifically for your foot shape will ensure that your running will be a safe, effective and enjoyable form of exercise!
